《老子》又名《道德经》，分为上下两篇，先论"道，可道，非常道"，后论"上德不德，是以有德"；于是遂有《道经》（一至三十七章）与《德经》（三十八至八十一章）二篇，合称《道德经》。傅教授根据自己研习中西哲学三十余年的心得，解读《老子》，特别注重书中传达的深刻哲理与智慧，以凸显哲学"爱好智慧"的本义。在每一章原文之后，用白话取代一般读本的注释，文字上力求通顺畅达。而在解读部分，则参考了历代注家制当代学者的研究成果，并专就关键概念加以解析，可作为了解老子及道家思想简明易懂的入门书。
