Railway Modeller

Sep 01 2026
Magazine

Still Britain's most popular model railway monthly magazine with over 800 issues published since it was launched. Always at the very heart of the hobby, and justly proud of its policy to cover all the scales and gauges and topics of interest to both ready-to-run enthusiasts and kit and scratchbuilders alike.

Railway Modeller

Welcome • Changing times

Crook Street • In the relatively small confines of his cellar, ALLAN PILKINGTON has created a fine tribute to the London & North Western Railway in 7mm scale.

British Thomson-Houston Type 1 Bo-Bo (Class 15) • IAN CAIRNS describes how he married a 3D-printed body with a proprietary mechanism to model a BR diesel class that has hitherto not been produced ready-to-run in N, with accompanying 4mm scale drawings from the RAILWAY MODELLER archive.

Our hobby in the limelight • A stage play about model railways? RM Editor Craig Tiley heads to Nottingham to see a performance of The Market Deeping Model Railway Club at the city’s Playhouse Theatre and discover more about the production’s background.

Heaton Grove • With storage and portability being key considerations, DAVID ELLIS built this compact OO gauge layout to have a fold-up scenic section, thereby providing a crated footprint of just 4' x 2'.

Mynydd y Ddraig

A pair of LMS open wagons • IAN NUTTALL describes how he used completely different approaches to construct two near-identical vehicles for use on his OO gauge Settle & Carlisle layout.

Pettleworth Downs • After enjoying taking their first layout to several exhibitions, JAMES WRIGHT and his brother NICK WRIGHT decided to embark on building a new layout that was designed with exhibiting in mind, learning from previous mistakes to create their own slice of the Southern Region that would be fun to both operate and view.

Setting the scene with modelling experience courses at Pecorama • Later this year, Peco will be running more of its practical Railway Modelling Experience courses at its site in East Devon. RM Features & News Writer Simon Artymiuk recently had an opportunity to sample a Bringing the Layout to Life (Landscape & Scenery) session, to discover what those booking one of these courses can expect.

Going full circle in O • With circular layouts in 7mm scale usually requiring lots of space, the Gauge O Guild embarked on an initiative to help make this format accessible to more of its members, with the added benefit of creating continuous run exhibits for the organisation’s own programme of events – including this year’s Guildex at the Stafford County Showground on 5 & 6 September. Guild President IAN ALLEN and Chairman JACKIE KNEESHAW explain how the project was brought to fruition.

Knype Bridge

Through the Railway Room Door Beckindale • NEIL RUSHBY describes this home-based OO gauge layout created by his modelling friend TREFOR DAVIES . Set in the 1960s transitional period with steam and diesel traction, the project was completed largely using commercially available products.

Stockborough • GEOFFREY SMITH tells the story of this demountable home-based OO gauge model railway system, which was designed at the outset for ease of dismantling and re-erecting, should the need arise.

Converting a plastic coach kit in OO • BOB PETCH describes this plausible adaptation of a four-wheel coach kit, which he has undertaken a number of times to create greater variety in his collection of pre-Grouping rolling stock.
