Running low on cash and unlucky in love, Stone Barrington is not having a good week. After a night at Elaine’s, his luck seems to improve when he’s hired to do a little discreet detective work in the balmy paradise of Key West. But despite its clear blue skies, palm-lined streets, and gingerbread mansions, Key West proves to be more dangerous than Stone had anticipated. Drugs, fraud, and a mysterious death from the past may be inextricably linked to what had seemed an open-and-shut case; and a sudden turn of events will test the limits of the law, and Stone’s willingness to go the extra mile for a client.
With its surprising twists, daring trysts, and razor-sharp action, Loitering with Intent is another gripping read from a gifted–and witty–storyteller.

Never one to avoid a glamorous vacation spot, Stone Barrington travels to Key West, Fla., in this easygoing entry in bestseller Woods's long-running series (Hot Mahogany
, etc.) to feature the New York cop turned lawyer. Stone is supposed to track down Evan Keating, a young man whose signature is needed on documents allowing his father to sell the family business, except that Evan doesn't want to be found and when he is, doesn't want to sign the papers. Meanwhile, there's always time to enjoy good food and romance. Stone and Dino Bacchetti, his former NYPD partner, eat a lot of conch, while a beautiful Swedish doctor, Annika Swenson, learns the hard way that being involved with Stone is the most dangerous job in America. Woods handles the proceedings with dispatch and good humor, the pages fly by, and contented readers will sit back and eagerly await the next installment. Author tour.

Actor Tony Roberts's depiction of Stone Barrington is so solid that it's hard to imagine anyone else portraying the hero. Roberts's work on the latest Barrington novel is no exception. If there's ever a Stone Barrington movie, Roberts would be perfect for the role of the aging cop turned lawyer and detective. In LOITERING, Barrington gets a cushy assignment from his law firm: Go to Key West to get some legal documents signed. He takes along his cop buddy, Dino Bacchante, who provides comic relief with a New York accent thick enough to cut with a knife. As usual, things get crazy, and the simple assignment turns out to be a killer--literally. Roberts gets to stretch himself with several female parts, which he handles convincingly. M.S.
